Meyler appointed as Cork hurling boss

John Meyler, father of Ireland soccer international David, has been appointed as Cork hurling manager.

Meyler senior takes charge of the Rebel County  hurlers on a two-year basis. He takes on the role having previously served as Cork’s senior selector and also as under-21 coach and will take over from outgoing boss Kieran Kingston.

As well as assisting Kingston for the last two years, Meyler previously served as a Cork selector back in the 2000s. He won the Christy Ring Cup in 2011 when serving as manager of the Kerry hurling team and has also managed the Carlow hurlers.

Speaking on the announcement, Cork chairman Gerard Lane described how Meyler’s role is to continue the development that the county has experienced during Kingston’s tenure.

"Our senior hurlers had a very successful season in 2017, and maintaining continuity and building on that good work is vital," he said.

"John Meyler brings a wealth of experience to the role, has extensive knowledge of all the young players coming through, and has been part of the outgoing management team. John will now work on appointing his backroom team. We wish him every success in the role."

Cork hurling is without an All-Ireland title since 2005, and endured an unsuccessul first season under Kingston in 2016 before he turned around their fortunes in 2017, winning the Munster Senior Championship and taking his side to the semi-finals of the All-Ireland for the first time since 2014.

Kingston stood down from the role due to level of time commitment involved with the role having rejected the offer of a two-year contract extension.

Missing the Championship already? eir Sport will broadcast up to 30 games from the GAA Football and Hurling Club Championships in 2017, including the Dublin club football championship final between Ballymun Kickhams and reigning Dublin champions St Vincent's from Parnell Park on Bank Holiday Monday, 30 October, which will be shown live on eir Sport 2 [throw-in 7pm].
