Michael Conlan’s revenge match against Vladimir Nikitin, the man who controversially beat him at the Rio Olympics, is LIVE on eir sport 1 this Saturday night/Sunday morning from 2am.
The long-awaited bout, which had been mooted for Conlan’s triumphant homecoming in Belfast back in August, is part of a strong undercard on the Terence Crawford v Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas world welterweight title fight at New York’s Madison Square Gardens.
Nikitin was controversially given the decision when the pair met in the quarter-final of the 56kg division at the Rio Olympics in 2016. The Russian was unable to fight in the semi-final due to injuries he had sustained against Conlan.
The London 2012 bronze medallist has always expressed a desire to fight the Russian again to set the record straight for once and for all.
The Conlan fight is just one part of an exciting undercard as Terence Crawford defends his WBO welterweight world title against the undefeated Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas. The other title fight sees IBF lightweight world champion Richard ‘RC’ Commey defendg his title against Brooklyn native Teofimo Lopez.
“This is the best fight card of the year, and Madison Square Garden is a fitting venue for what will be a special night,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum.
“Terence Crawford is a generational talent, but he’ll have his hands full against the ‘Mean Machine.’ Teofimo Lopez is taking a giant step up against Commey, and it will be a tremendous fight. Mick Conlan has been asking for Nikitin since the day he signed with Top Rank. He finally gets his wish, and I know he wants to correct the tremendous injustice of the Rio Olympics.”
Commenting on his welterweight title defence, Crawford said: “Egidijus Kavaliauskas is a two-time Olympian and I can’t take him lightly. He’s got everything to gain and nothing to lose and that makes him dangerous. I never overlook any opponent, and this will be no exception.”
