Jonathan Walters is set for a spell on the sidelines as he recovers from minor knee surgery.
Walters has been nursing a knee injury for several weeks and he is expected to be out for up to a month after undergoing a minor operation on the problem.
"We are missing Jonny Walters unfortunately, who is suffering a problem with his knee," Stoke manager Mark Hughes told the Stoke Sentinel.
"As a consequence of that he is going to be missing for a little bit, so that leaves us short up front to be perfectly honest."
The Republic of Ireland face Wales in a World Cup qualifier on March 24 and manager Martin O'Neill will be hoping the striker's absence is a short one.
