Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has apologised to the club's doctor after he was prevented from returning to the pitch during the 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
Mitrovic scored the equaliser as Newcastle secured a 1-1 draw in the Tyne-Wear derby but was knocked unconscious a short time later following a collision with Lamine Kone.
Premier League regulations state that a player is not allowed to play on following a head injury but Mitrovic was not aware of the rule and had to be restrained by doctor Paul Catterson as he attempted to return to the pitch before manager Rafael Benitez stepped in to reason with him.
He has now apologised to Catterson for the incident on the touchline.
"I didn't know what the procedure was. I didn't know the rules," he told Serbian newspaper Blic. "I apologised to the doctor after the game because I knew I had to come off after being knocked unconscious for a few seconds. I've been through the examinations, my head is fine."
