Mourinho offers Schweinsteiger little hope

Jose Mourinho has warned Bastian Schweinsteiger that it will be 'very difficult' for him to play for Manchester United this season.

Schweinsteiger has two years to run on his contract at Old Trafford but he has been forced to train with the Under-23s since Mourinho's arrival in the summer.

Earlier this week the Germany international released a statement in which he revealed that Manchester United would be his final club in Europe and, while he has made himself available if needed, the midfielder has been told that he is unlikely to feature this season.

"We have 23 players in squad. In principle, no-one leaving. That is more than enough. If we have any kind of problem and opportunity there are a few young players here and I would be more than happy to accelerate them," Mourinho said.

When asked if Schweinsteiger could play, Mourinho added: "It is very difficult. Not impossible. But we have a decision completely made about Pogba, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Carrick. That is my five players for two positions."

Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge voiced his unhappiness at the situation earlier this month and warned future signings to think long and hard before making the decision to move to United.

While he would not be drawn on Schweinsteiger's decision to release a statement, Mourinho took the opportunity to aim a dig in Rummenigge's direction.

"I cannot answer for him (Schweinsteiger). It is his life and career he has right to make that decision and that is not a problem for us," Mourinho told reporters.

"He is not speaking a lot and gave his last statement, which he is completely free to do in an objective and polite way. No problem. I thought after I read some quotes from Bayern Munich they would run to Manchester to bring him back. That did not happen. I am surprised Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is not here now."
