Mourinho prepared to drop big names

Jose Mourinho has warned his Manchester United players that no one is untouchable.

Mourinho has already shown that he is not afraid to drop players by relegating captain Wayne Rooney to the bench for United's last four games and he would be prepared to make the same call with the likes of Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

During his first spell as Chelsea manager, Mourinho named nine players who were droppable from his strongest XI but he believes the two situations cannot be compared. Instead he insists the only things that are 'non-negotiable' are the team's spirit, commitment and pride.

“That was 11 years ago, a different Premier League and situation - it was the best team by far," Mourinho said when asked if United have untouchable players. "Untouchable in our team has to be the spirit, the commitment, the pride, the commitment to the club, respect to the fans, that has to be untouchable, not players.”

Rooney has not started a game for United since the club's EFL Cup tie against Northampton and Mourinho has refused to confirm if he will start against Fenerbahce in Thursday's Europa League game.

"I don’t want to give you the team, honestly. Wayne is working well - he’s one of the big responsible people for the atmosphere that the players can breathe because he’s positive, he’s a good example. We count on him to start or be on the bench, but he will be there tomorrow," Mourinho told reporters.
