David Moyes has warned would-be suitors that Jermain Defoe is not for sale.
West Ham tabled a £5million bid for the striker earlier this week but the Black Cats wasted little time in rejecting the offer.
Defoe has already scored 11 times this season and with the club battling to retain their Premier League status, Moyes has made it clear he will not be sold during the January transfer window.
“West Ham made a bid and we rejected it. We have said Jermain is not for sale and he is not for sale," Moyes confirmed.
“That has come from the owner. He says he is not for sale. We have not put a price on him or asked for a second bid."
Defoe signed a three year contract when he moved to the Stadium of Light two years ago and he agreed a new one-year extension last summer.
“He signed a new contract in the summer. He is here. I don't see him having a problem, He is really important for us. Very little has been said by Sunderland AFC," Moyes added.
"The talking has come from elsewhere. He is liked here. He is in a real purple patch in his career and hopefully his is enjoying it and is steady with that.
“If he keeps scoring at the rate he is he will put himself up there with the best from this club like Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn.”
