Murray and Ramos-Vinolas progress

Scot beats Isner after Spaniard stuns Raonic

Andy Murray recorded a straight-sets defeat of John Isner at the French Open, following a shock win for Albert Ramos-Vinolas over Milos Raonic.

Isner provided second seed Murray with a significant challenge but the Scot had the discipline and composure to get the better of the American at crucial stages.

Murray secured a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4, 6-3 win to progress to a quarter-final meeting with either either fifth seed Kei Nishikori or ninth seed Richard Gasquet.

Ramos-Vinolas also won in three sets, ending eighth seed Raonic's participation in the tournament.

The unseeded Barcelona man produced some vicious hitting on his way to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 triumph , reaching his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final in the process.

The 28-year-old will face defending champion Stan Wawrinka in the last eight, with the Swiss third seed having defeated Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-2.

"I played a great match," said Ramos-Vinolas following his surprise win.

"I think the cloudy conditions helped me, as they made the court slower.

"It was a great day. I played solid and put a lot of first serves in. These are very good days."

In the women's competition, Garbine Muguruza eased past former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova to set up a clash with Shelby Rogers.

Kuznetsova, the 2009 victor, was outplayed by her 22-year-old opponent, who won 6-3, 6-4.

Rogers triumphed by the same scoreline, defeating Romania's Camelia Begu.

The unseeded American has never before reached the last eight of a Grand Slam tournament.
