New doc: Out of Their League this Monday

A real treat for League of Ireland fans, eir sport 1 will show brand new documentary Out of Their League next Monday, June 29th at 8pm.

Directed by Craig Speer and produced by Geoff Power and Medb Johnstone for Igloo Productions Ltd., the one-hour piece follows four out of contract footballers, each at different stages of their careers, as they look to find new clubs in the 2019 close season.

The four – Ryan Masterson, Sean Boyd, Evan White and Michael Schlingermann - sign up to the PFAI camp which is aimed at helping them find new clubs.

The camp is run by Stephen McGuinness and his team at the Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland., with recently-retired Bohemians’ skipper Derek Pender taking charge of the group in what is his first coaching role.

Masterson is a 23-year-old Dubliner who was released from Bohs in early 2019. A skillful centre-forward, he has been injured for the best part of two years and is desperate to rekindle his fledgling football career.

Meanwhile, Boyd is a 21-year-old striker who has had an impressive career to date with Shamrock Rovers. Surprisingly released by his club at the end of the 2019 campaign, he could prove an excellent acquisition for many clubs.

21-year-old White played much of his early football as a central midfielder before switching to defence. He was signed by Warrenpoint in July 2019, but due to travel constraints and family commitments left the club by mutual consent a few months later.

Schlingermann will be familiar to GAA fans after recently completing two years with the senior Mayo football panel. At an age when most goalies are just reaching their prime, the 28-year-old is hoping to resume his career with a contract in the west.

The documentary delves deep into both the football and home lives of the four participants in what is a critical juncture for all of them. It takes you into the very heart of sport, where skill and ambition are not always enough. It shows what top sports people have to do when injury puts those dreams on hold and when personality clashes can hamper a player’s career.

Can they lift themselves one more time and continue to pursue their dreams of playing at the top level of Irish football?
