Robbie Keane will not be playing in the League of Ireland next year, according to his wife Claudine.
The Irish Daily Star reported on Monday that Shamrock Rovers had held "exploratory talks" with Ireland's record goalscorer, after he confirmed last week that he is leaving MLS side LA Galaxy after five seasons.
However, Keane's wife Claudine wrote on Twitter that the family are not returning to Ireland in the near future, and denied the story linking the 36-year-old with Shamrock Rovers.
"So many people asking if we’re moving back to Ireland," she tweeted.
"We will be home for Christmas but not for long, maybe in a few more years from now."
Mrs Keane says the story in the Irish newspaper took the family by surprise, even though Keane's former Leeds United team-mate Stephen McPhail was recently appointed the Hoops’ director of football, while his friend and former Ireland team-mate Damien Duff is also on the coaching staff at the Tallaght Stadium.
"No, first we heard of it. It’s just a rumour, no truth to it," she continued.
Keane, who spoke of hoping for "a last major challenge" in football after confirming his departure from LA Galaxy, could continue his career in China or Australia.
Melbourne Victory are keen on signing a high-profile guest player in the upcoming transfer window after missing out on signing former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.
