Nunes: Rousey should retire
UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes insists Ronda Rousey should retire after the Brazilian defeated the 29-year-old inside 48 seconds in Las Vegas on Friday.
Rousey – who was returning to the octagon for the first time since her first defeat to Holly Holmes last year - looked rusty as she struggled to counter Nunes' flurry of hard shots before referee Herb Dean stepped in.
Speaking to the media after the bout, Nunes - who has now won five consecutive fights – admitted that although Rousey has done a lot for the women’s division, it is time she retired.
"Before I walked out, (my team and I) talked, and this moment was my moment," Nunes told the UFC website.
"(Rousey) had her time, she did a lot for the sport. I thank Ronda Rousey. But right now, I showed I'm the champion and I'm here to stay.
"For sure, she’s going to retire.
"If she wants a rematch, I’m going to do the same thing. She can’t take my punches.
"Why does she want to keep doing that? You know, keep hurting herself.
"You can’t be a champion forever, and she has to retire."
Rousey declined to speak to the media after last night’s defeat, and there is no indication whether hit the former Olympic judo medallist will retire after falling to just her second defeat in her professional career.
