John 'Bubbles' O'Dwyer struggled to contain his satisfaction after the forward helped Tipperary to a superb 2-29 to 2-20 All-Ireland final victory over Kilkenny at Croke Park.
Tipp produced a stunning display of chance creation and clinical finishing in the second period to surge ahead of the Cats, eventually winning by a nine-point margin.
O'Dwyer scored a crucial goal to put the Premier County back ahead after Kevin Kelly's 41st-minute three-pointer had looked like it might turn the match in the favour of Brian Cody's side.
And O'Dywer, whose place in the starting XV was questioned in some quarters, was thrilled to answer his critics with a personal tally of 1-5 and an stunning all-round display.
“2014 is forgotten about,” he told RTE. “We’re champions of 2016.”
“People have been doubting this team. We knew exactly what we had in this team, in this dressing room in 2016.
“Everyone doubted us from the start of the year. We proved our doubters wrong today. We’re champions of f**king Ireland!
“I had my doubters at the start of the year. I think I’m after proving my doubters wrong here now.
“Myself, Seamie (Callanan) and Johnny (McGrath) in the inside forward line, we do the easy part. It’s the boys out in the middle of the field and in the backs that do the hard part.
"We’re only there to finish. I got the chance and put it away.”
