O'Neill downplays contract issues

Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has refused to comment on speculation that he has been approached to take over at Hull City.

O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports after Ireland's 2-2 draw with Serbia in the World Cup Group D qualifier in Belgrade on Monday, moved the subject back to his players after being asked to comment on the rumours.

"I don’t think anything of that - I am delighted that we have got off the mark here in what was a very difficult game for us," the 64-year-old said.

And, when asked whether he had any interest in taking over as Steve Bruce's long-term successor at the KCOM Stadium, O'Neill insisted that he was still committed to Ireland and will sign the contract that has been on the table since before the Euro 2016 finals in June.

"There will really be no hiccups there, we should have got it sorted," he said.

"In fact, we have shaken hands on the deal quite some time ago."

Daryl Murphy was delighted to net his first international goal, in his 23rd appearance for his country, nine years after his 2007 debut against Ecuador in New Jersey.

The 33-year-old, who joined Newcastle United from Ipswich Town during the summer, headed home Robbie Brady's 81st minute corner to secure a 2-2 draw against the Serbians in the Red Star Stadium

"I had to get off the mark at some stage,” Murphy told RTE.

"To score here tonight and get off the mark, I’m just delighted. I had a lot of time on it, there was no one near me, I had time to make a mess of it, but I made sure I got good contact on it.

"Hopefully there’ll be more to come."
