On The Fringe wins Foxhunter Chase


Nina Carberry rode On The Fringe to Foxhunter Chase success on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Carberry held off the challenge of Marito and Paint The Clouds to win the blue riband event for amateur jockeys.

The JP McManus-owned, Enda Bolger-trained On The Fringe, who won the race last year, took the lead over the final fence after some clever riding by Carberry.

"I was boxed in and nowhere to go coming up there. This is the best," she said.

"We missed the third last and lost two lengths but he kept going - he loves the spring ground."

2012 Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton, an amateur who only started riding last year, steered Pacha Du Polder to a creditable fifth with an impressive late run.

"I am overwhelmed at how lovely the crowd has been," she said.

"I am honoured to have been given this opportunity. It has been such a thrill.

"This is up there with anything I have ever done. Thank you to all the jockeys who have been so welcoming to me, to be accepted as part of this has been great. This is one of the greatest achievements of my life."
