One Track Mind wins Stayers Hurdle

English horse wins feature race at Punchestown

One Track Mind claimed the Grade One Champion Stayers Hurdle on day three of the Punchestown Festival.

With Gavin Sheehan on board, the Warren Greatrex-trained horse stayed on to win the three mile chase in fine style from Jennies Jewel.

Pre-race favourite Alpha Des Obeaux, who was second to Thistlecrack in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham, failed to impress and never threatened to win the race, finishing a distant third in the end.

One Track Mind, Jennies Jewel and the Willie Mullins-trained Shaneshill all looked to be in contention coming to the last before Shaneshill unseated rider Ruby Walsh.

That was the signal for Sheehan to make his move and raced clear to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths.

"This is brilliant. We've always liked this horse," the winning jockey said afterwards.

"In the early days we always thought this was going to be the best horse in the yard. He came over here a fresh horse. I was never that comfortable as I wanted to get him a bit closer as the more company he has the better he is.

"He was fighting down to the last and battled on. I always said he could be a Gold Cup-type horse."
