Paralympics: Ireland fall to brilliant Brazilians

Ireland's 7-a-side soccer team's hopes of progressing at the Paralympics were dealt a hammer blow as they lost 7-1 to hosts Brazil.

There was little the Boys in Green could do to match the silky skills of a Brazil side who were outstanding on the day.

Their tough task in front of 7,000 home fans got much harder on four minutes when the hosts took the lead through Wanderson Silva de Oliveira.

The luck wasn't with the Irish 12 minutes later when Leandro Goncalves do Amaral's effort was deflected home off a defender.

The game was effectively ended as a contest when Brazil grabbed their in the 20th minute and Ireland did well to hold the deficit - Aaron Tier pulling off some good saves - to just three by half-time.

Tier was helpless shortly after the break however, when Fabrizio Nascimento de Oliverio hammered home a powerful header.

A fifth and a sixth followed not long after and the rout was completed in the 52nd minute, harsh on a brave Ireland effort.

They did get some consolation with substitute Dillon Sheridan's goal and while that pleased manager Barry Ferguson, he was disappointed overall that his side didn't play their best.

"We never really came out of the traps, they’re a really good team but we never showed up, that was the disappointing thing," he said. "We were 1 nil down after four minutes and that was the game over. I think the atmosphere and the occasion got to us a little bit

"We’ll need to do a lot of recovery now to try and lift them for our game with GB. It’s probably not the bodies but the minds that we’ll need to lift but we’ll all work hard together to recover. Brazil are a smashing team and I’d imagine the final will be between them and Ukraine."
