Pardew excited by Benteke's impending arrival

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew is looking forward to finally getting the opportunity to work with Christian Benteke.

The Belgium international will undergo his medical at Selhurst Park on Friday after Crystal Palace agreed a club-record fee with Liverpool for the striker.

The transfer could be concluded before Palace's Premier League clash with Tottenham on Saturday and Pardew believes he is the type of player his side are lacking.

“I wanted to take him to Newcastle – I thought he’d be a fantastic fit for that club. He got a move to Liverpool and it has not quite worked out," Pardew told reporters when asked about the proposed transfer.

“For us to get him back to what he does best – his style of play and the way he feeds off crosses. We are the top crossing team in the Premier League bar one. With the wide players we’ve got he is going to get that.

“Of course we are talking about a player who is not ours yet.

“We know up the top of the pitch we are a little bit shy. I can see a spring in everybody’s step with this news.”

Having lost Yannick Bolasie to Everton earlier this week, Pardew has stressed the importance of bringing in a replacement.

"It's still subject to a medical and personal terms but in terms of an agreement with Liverpool finally we seem to have got there," he said.

"I don't want to talk too much about it because it's still not complete. But Yannick Bolasie and Mile Jedinak have left this week and I think it's important to replace iconic players with iconic players.

"That's something that didn't always happen at Newcastle, so I'm pleased the board has been brave with his move."
