Patriots stun Falcons to win Super Bowl

The New England Patriots produced a brilliant comeback to beat Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime of Super Bowl LI.

The Patriots trailed by 25 points in the third quarter but they fought back to level at 28-28 and take the match into overtime.

Having won the toss the Patriots completed their remarkable turnaround when James White touched down to take his personal tally to 20, sealing a remarkable 34-28 victory.

It is the first time in history a team have come from more than ten points down to win the Super Bowl.

Atlanta won the game's first coin toss but they allowed Tom Brady and New England's offence in first only for the game's first quarter to end without a score on the board.

The opening touchdown came courtesy of Devonta Freeman before Austin Hooper caught Matt Ryan's pass to cross for a second touchdown. Atlanta then found themselves 21-0 after Robert Alford's 82-yard touchdown.

New England managed to get some points on the board through Stephen Gostkowski' field goal to leave them trailing 21-3 at the half-time break, but they soon found themselves further behind when Tevin Coleman got the game's fourth touchdown.

The Patriots refused to give in and they finally got their first touchdown through White late in the third quarter only for Gostkowski to miss the extra points.

Gostkowski made amends with another field goal in the fourth quarteras the Patriots scored 19 unanswered points, including a pair of two-point conversions to take the game into an extra period.

The Falcons looked shaken and their confidence was rocked further after losing the coin toss. Sensing their opportunity the Patriots came out fighting with White's two-yard touchdown sealing a remarkable win for New England.

"That was exactly the way we didn't plan it. It was a hell of a football game," Brady, who became the first quarterback to win five Super Bowl rings, said.

"This is an incredible team and I'm just happy to be a part of it. We overcame a lot of different things and it's all worth it."

"To be 28-3 down, it was a lot of mental toughness from our team and we're all going to remember this for the rest of our life."
