Paul Gascoigne suffers "relapse"

Gary Mabbutt reveals Gazza getting help

Paul Gascoigne has suffered another relapse in his battle with alcoholism but is getting the treatment he requires according to former teammate Gary Mabbutt.

Pictures showing Gazza with cuts to his face while being accompanied by a police officer appeared in The Sun newspaper.

The snaps also showed the 48-year-old carrying a bottle of beer and Mabbutt told the newspaper that Gascoigne had "been taken in for his own welfare. As far as I’m aware he’s just gone in and he’s being looked after. It’s being treated as someone who has this condition and has had the relapse."

The former Spurs, Lazio and Newcastle midfielder has had a long battle with alcohol and has suffered a number of relapses over the last decade.

At a screening of a film about his life last June, Gascoigne spoke of how he was in a good place and added that he prays he does not "pick up another drink. I don't want to but I just stay strong for you guys... I love the world, I love the people in it and the most important bit, you know, today I love myself."
