Payne in Six Nations fitness race

Jared Payne has been ruled out for at least three months after sustaining a kidney injury in Ireland's defeat of Australia last weekend.

Payne took a heavy blow to the rib cage during the first half of the 27-24 win at the Aviva Stadium and it was thought that he had suffered a fractured rib. However, a scan has confirmed he suffered a kidney injury in the incident.

As well as missing Ulster's Champions Cup double header against Clermont Auvergne later this month and the games against Exeter Chiefs and Bordeaux-Begles, Payne is likely in a race to be fit for the RBS Six Nations.

Payne's Ulster team-mate Andrew Trimble limped off in the first half of the win over the Wallabies due to an ankle injury.

Scans have confirmed a tendon injury which will keep him sidelined for a couple of weeks.
