Phelan nominated for August award

Hull caretaker manager Mike Phelan has been nominated for the Manager of the Month award for August.

Despite having a threadbare squad, newly-promoted Hull defeated Premier League champions Leicester on the opening day of the season before enjoying a 2-0 win away to Swansea City.

Although they lost their unbeaten record at home to Manchester United, the Tigers came within just minutes of holding Jose Mourinho's men to a draw at the KCOM Stadium and Phelan’s achievements have seen him nominated for the August prize.

Phelan has been shortlisted alongside Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte with all three enjoying an unbeaten start to the season with their respective clubs.

Hull captain Curtis Davis has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August.

Davis has been pivotal to Hull's strong start to the season but he faces stiff competition from Chelsea winger Eden Hazard, City's Raheem Sterling and Antonio Valencia from United.

After a difficult season last year, Sterling has rediscovered the form that convinced City to lure him to the Etihad Stadium and he has been a key member of Guardiola's team in the opening three matches, scoring two goals and setting up one.

Hazard also endured a difficult season last tear but he has scored twice for the Blues and has made more successful passes in the final third of the pitch than anyone else in the league.

Valencia, meanwhile, is part of the United defence who have conceded just one goal from three matches.
