Yaya Toure netted twice, as Manchester City beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park to go level on points with Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
Toure, making his first Premier League start of the season, opened the scoring on the 39th minute with City's first shot on target, via a deflection off Palace defender James Tomkins, following an exchanges of passes with Nolito inside the penalty area.
But, seconds after Joel Ward had cleared a Sergio Aguero shot off his own line, Palace counter-attacked to level it up at 1-1 midway through the second half, with Eagles' substitute Connor Wickham outpacing Pablo Zabaleta to shoot past City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
But, making his first league appearance since April, Ivorian midfielder Toure sidefooted home seven minutes from time from Kevin de Bruyne's corner to inflict a fifth consecutive league defeat, and a 19th defeat of 2016, on Alan Pardew's side.
Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Southampton at a rain-drenched St Mary's, but a point is still good enough to keep the Reds ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table on goal difference.
Former Saint Sadio Mane was denied by a superb save from Fraser Forster and later by a stunning Virgil Van Dijk block.
Fellow returnee Nathaniel Clyne also came close to scoring but he headed wide late on.
Brazilian pair Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino also threatened the Saints’ goal but found Forster and his defence in resolute form.
Charlie Austin had the best chance for the hosts but he headed wide.
Ireland captain Seamus Coleman netted a late leveller, as Everton drew 1-1 with Swansea City at Goodison Park.
The Welsh side secured their first away point of the season under new boss Bob Bradley, but it was a case of two points dropped rather than one gained after they failed to close out the victory.
Glyfi Sigurdsson sent Toffees' goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg the wrong way from the penalty spot four minutes before the break, after Phil Jagielka pulled down the Iceland midfielder in the Everton penalty area.
But Coleman headed home an 89th-minute equaliser from Yannick Bolasie's header to give Ronald Koeman's side a share of the spoils.
Jermaine Defoe and Victor Anichebe were on target, as Sunderland made it back-to-back Premier League wins with a 3-0 victory over fellow strugglers Hull City at the Stadium of Light.
Defoe netted the 150th Premier League goal of his career with a drilled finish on 34 minutes, then, following a ten-minute interruption following a floodlight failure, Anichebe made it 2-0 on 62 minutes with an emphatic left-footed shot which beat Tigers' goalkeeper David Marshall at his near post.
Anichebe then wrapped up the scoring on 84 minutes from Defoe's pass, but manager David Moyes will be equally as satisfied with the Black Cats' first clean sheet of the season, secured by two fine stops from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to deny Robert Snodgrass and Curtis Davies in the second half, and unaffected by Papy Djilobodji's late sending-off for a second yellow card.
Bournemouth climbed into the top half of the table after Nathan Ake's header earned the Cherries a 1-0 win at Stoke.
The centre-back rose highest to meet Junior Stanislas' cross to score the only goal of what was an at-times ill-tempered game at the Bet365 Stadium.
Mark Hughes’ side were handed a great opportunity to draw level when Simon Francis was deemed to have fouled Bojan Krkic but the former Barcelona attacker smashed the resulting penalty against the bar.
The Potters also failed to finish any chances late on which fell to Xherdan Shaqiri, Jon Walters and Bruno Martins Indi and so lost their six-match unbeaten run.
The win was the visitors’ first away from home in the league this campaign.
Watford remain in eighth position in the Premier League table after they defeated champions Leicester City 2-1 at Vicarage Road.
Etienne Capoue opened the scoring inside the first minute when he volleyed home a neat finish before Roberto Pereyra doubled their lead on 12 minutes.
Leicester halved the deficit just four minutes later when Riyad Mahrez slotted home a penalty after Miguel Britos had fouled Jamie Vardy.
However, the Hornets closed out a deserved win to leave Claudio Ranieri’s side without an away league victory this season.
