Pulis in limbo over Berahino

Tony Pulis remains hopeful that Saido Berahino will agree a new contract with West Brom.

Berahino has been offered a new contract by the Baggies despite not playing for the first-team since September, but Stoke are keen to land the striker during the transfer window.

With his contract due to run out at the end of the season, West Brom risk losing him on a free transfer but Pulis admits he does not know if the 23-year-old will still be at The Hawthorns come the end of January.

“I haven’t got a clue what will happen," Pulis told his press conference on Friday.

"There’s no sign of him signing his contract. We’re still in limbo, like we have been over the last five windows so we just take it day-by-day. It’s not just Stoke - there’s other clubs interested as well.

"We'll see how it works out but we have not given up hope that he might sign here."

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has confirmed his interest in signing Berahino but admits there has been little in the way of progress.

"I'm hopeful that we'll be able to get something done. We're interested in him as a number of other clubs are," Hughes told reporters.

"Nothing has moved forward from last week. We are still waiting for the player's club to give us an indication.

"I think we are looking at players who we feel can improve us, not only short term but long term too, and we have taken that into consideration with this deal.

"It is out of our hands unfortunately, but we are ready to discuss the situation and see where it progresses.

"It has been long-winded, and sometimes you lose some enthusiasm when that happens, but I have learned over the years that you have to be patient."

Meanwhile, Pulis has spoken of his disappointment at missing out on Morgan Schneiderlin.

The Baggies had been keen to land the France international from Manchester United, but he finalised his move to Everton on Thursday evening.

Pulis believes signing Schneiderlin would have been a big statement for the club but he understands his reason for joining Everton.

"We missed out on Schneiderlin which was disappointing but I understand why,” Pulis explained. “We’re trying to get a level of player that will improve us.

“I understand Morgan’s reasoning.

“He’s gone to a club that have finished in the top seven for the last few years and play in front of 40,000 each week."

The Baggies would have broken the club transfer record had they landed Schneiderlin, but Pulis reveals there would have been more money to bring in additional faces.

“After Morgan there was still money to go for others as well," he added. “We’ve got people we’d like to bring in, whether we can is another matter.

“It’s a small pool we’re fishing from.

“I don’t want to get into a situation where there’s a lot of players here and you don’t know how good they are.”
