Read named All Blacks captain

Kieran Read has been named as the new captain of the All Blacks.

Read has skippered the team on nine occasions but Richie McCaw's retirement paved the way for him to take over the captaincy on a permanent basis and his appointment was confirmed by head coach Steve Hansen on Friday.

"Reado's had experience already as captain nine times. Whilst it will be a new experience to be there full time, at least he's had a taste of it," Hansen told Radio Sport.

McCaw was one of six stalwarts of the team to retire after last year's triumph in England and Hansen has revealed that Sam Cane is likely to take over at openside.

"Sam Cane's had a taste of test footy and he's raring to go," he said. "So if we're going in with all of those things brand new then it would be a lot different but I've got a lot of confidence in the people that are going to step up."
