Reed and Laird hold Barclays lead

Patrick Reed and Martin Laird are tied for the lead on five-under-par after the opening round of The Barclays in New York.

Reed currently occupies the final spot in the automatic qualifying places for the US Ryder Cup team and a good week for him will see him secure his place at Hazeltine.

The American shot a five-under 66 to join Laird at the top of the leaderboard with the duo one clear of a group of four players, including Rickie Fowler and JB Holmes.

Starting on the tenth, Reed parred the first ten holes of his round before finally picking up a shot on the par-four second. He holed from 15-feet at the fourth for eagle and added further birdies at the sixth and seventh to move to five-under.

He held the outright lead for a short time before he was joined on five-under by Laird, who birdied the third, fourth, seventh and eighth holes in a strong front nine. After seven successive pars, the Scot birdied the 16th on his way to a flawless round.

Emiliano Grillo and Kevin Chappell are in a tie for second along with Fowler and Holmes, while world number one Jason Day carded a three-under 68 to sit two strokes off the lead.

Playing for the first time since the PGA Championship, Day picked up one birdie in his opening nine only to drop a shot at the second, his 11th hole of the day. He recovered immediately with a birdie two on the par-three third and back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh ensured he finished in a tie for seventh alongside Jonas Blixt, Jhonattan Vegas and Sung Kang.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, endured a mixed day on the greens with his new putter as the four-time major winner bogeyed the 15th and 16th, his sixth and seventh holes, to leave him two over at the turn.

He got one of the shots back with a pleasing birdie at the second and was back to level par heading to the fifth. He picked up another shot on the seventh only to give it immediately back.
