Remi Garde has left Aston Villa by mutual consent.
The 49-year-old took over from Tim Sherwood on a three-and-a-half year contract in November but has left after being unable to arrest the Villans' slide towards relegation from the Premier League.
The Frenchman won only two of the 20 league games for which he was in charge and the lack of backing for him in the January transfer window seemed to suggest the club board had little faith in his ability to avoid the drop.
A statement released by the club late on Tuesday evening read:
"The Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Rémi for all his efforts during a difficult period and wish him well in the future.
"Eric Black will take over as acting manager until the Club appoints a new manager.
"There will be no further comment from the Club at this stage."
The former Lyon manager has been linked with a return to the French club this summer while Nigel Pearson has been tipped to take over the Villa Park hotseat.
