Ronaldo slams Iceland's "poor mentality"

Portugal draw with Iceland in St Etienne

Cristiano Ronaldo criticised Iceland players' "small mentality" after their 1-1 draw with Portugal in their Euro 2016 opener in St Etienne on Tuesday.

Birkir Bjarnason netted a second-half equaliser at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard to cancel out Nani's 31st minute opener and secure Iceland a point in their first match in their first major tournament.

The Iceland players celebrated wildly with their fans at the final whistle, prompting a peevish respons from the three-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"I thought they'd won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable," the 31-year-old said.

"When they don't try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition.

"it's difficult when one team don't try, but Portugal try and play football and try to win the game.

"Iceland didn't try anything, they were just defend, defend, defend and playing on the counter-attack. It was a lucky night for them."
