Wayne Rooney has "unreservedly" apologised after images emerged showing him on a night out while on international duty.
The Sun published images of Rooney looking worse for wear at a party at the team's hotel on Saturday night, the day after England's 2018 World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.
Rooney missed England's 2-2 draw with Spain on Tuesday night with a minor knee injury, with interim England manager Gareth Southgate forced to deny his absence was linked to the images.
A statement from Rooney's management company said: "Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published today.
"Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
"Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise.
"He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures."
The Football Association has said it will review how players spend their free time while on international duty.
"England personnel have a responsibility to behave appropriately at all times," a statement said.
"We will be reviewing our policy around free time while on international duty."
