Rosberg dominates Japanese practice

Nico Rosberg will be hoping to carry his good form into the weekend after dominating the first two free practice sessions for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Despite smoke emerging from his Mercedes as he pulled out of the garage early in the after, Rosberg came through the session without any problems and posted a 1:32.250 lap to deny team-mate Lewis Hamilton by 0.072 seconds.

The Mercedes drivers battled it out for the top spot during the session but it was Rosberg who went fastest once he had the soft-compound tyres on board and Hamilton had to settle for second spot.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was best of the rest, just over three tenths of a second behind Rosberg, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen coming fourth just ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the second Ferrari.

Sergio Perez was sixth with his Force India team-mate Nico Hulkenberg seventh and Fernando Alonso eight for McLaren.

Williams' Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz's Toro Rosso completed the top ten.

Earlier, Rosberg had outshone Hamilton to sit at the top of the timesheets at the end of the first free practice session.

Rosberg produced a 1:32.431 lap to finish 0.215seconds ahead of his championship rival, with Vettel and Raikkonen third and fourth respectively.

It was a better morning for Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo as he finished fifth - he was 12th in the second session - just ahead of Verstappen.

Hulkenberg finished in front of Perez in the morning with Alonso and Bottas completing the top ten.

There were a number of incidents over the course of the morning with Alonso damaging his rear wing when he spun and hit the barrier as he turned into the first part of Spoon, while Romain Grosjean was forced to return to the pits after going off the track at the second Degner.
