Rosberg quickest in first practice

German edges out Hamilton at Hockenheim

Nico Rosberg was quickest in the opening practice session at Hockenheim ahead of the German Grand Prix on Sunday.

He edged out Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by one-third of a second much to the delight of the home support with a fastest lap time of 1:15.516secs.

It was another dominant session for the Mercedes team with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finishing more than a second behind just ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton leads, who has taken charge of the championship for the first time this season following his victory in Hungary last weekend, was one third of a second slower than his Mercedes team-mate.

Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were fifth and sixth respectively as the latter prepared for his 100th grand prix race.

Fernando Alonso, celebrating his 35th birthday, was next for McLaren, finishing four-tenths of a second ahead of team-mate Jenson Button.
