Rosberg wanted Alonso to replace him

Nico Rosberg has revealed he wanted Fernando Alonso to replace him at Mercedes.

A number of drivers were linked to the vacancy following Rosberg's shock retirement in November, just five days after being crowned champion in Abu Dhabi, with Mercedes eventually signing Valtteri Bottas from Williams.

Rosberg admits he would have liked Alonso to replace him to ensure 'fireworks' with Lewis Hamilton.

"Everyone says Alonso and I say it too because there would be fireworks with Hamilton," Rosberg told Spanish publication when asked who he wanted to take over from him.

"As a fan, it would be nice, but for the team it wouldn't work."

Rosberg denied Hamilton a third straight championship and he believes Bottas can challenge his Mercedes team-mate.

"They've found a great solution. Bottas is fast and though Hamilton will be at a very, very high level and it will be difficult to beat him, I have proved that he can," he said.
