Saunders camp keen on Golovkin or Alvarez

A fight against Gennady Golovkin or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is the "logical" next step for Billy Joe Saunders, according to promoter Frank Warren.

Saunders defends his WBO middleweight title against Willie Monroe Jr on Saturday, a fight which will be shown live on Box Nation on the eir Sport pack [coverage starts 8.30pm], and Warren the 28-year-old will meet the winner of the bout between IBF, WBA and WBC champion Golovkin and Alvarez to unify the titles.

Saunders, 28, has won all 24 of his professional fights while Monroe has lost two of his 23 bouts.

Golovkin and Alvarez face off in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning, just hours after the Saunders v Monroe fight at the Copper Box Arena in London.

"It's the only way the winner of the Golovkin-Alvarez fight can unify the titles, and that's the logical fight," Warren said.

"We will make it happen. I'm absolutely confident, we will deliver it.

"If it's Canelo it'll be in the States, and if it's Golovkin we may have a chance of staging it in the UK. If Golovkin wins, it looks like they'll want to fight some time in December."

But Monroe Jr, 30, who was stopped by Golovkin in 2015, says neither the Kazakhstan champion nor Alvarez rate Saunders, and joked that the Mexican, 27, had not even heard of the WBO champion.

"Canelo said he didn't even know who he was," said Monroe.

"I know he showed up to a couple of their press conferences and Canelo and Golovkin pretty much said the same thing: he talks too much."

Saturday's bill also features exciting British heavyweight Daniel Dubois, who takes on AJ Carter for the vacant Southern Area title.

Billy Joe Saunders will fight Willie Monroe Junior for the WBO middleweight title at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday, 16 September. The fight will be live on the eir Sport pack, on BoxNation, and coverage starts from 8.30pm.
