Schmidt keen to move on

Player safety paramount concdern for all

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt is keen to move on from last weekend's controversial defeat to New Zealand as quickly as possible.

Speaking ahead of Ireland's final autumn series clash against Australia, he said that he doesn't want to see a situation where referees are under so much pressure that the game is stopped every few minutes to look at video footage of what may or may not have happened.

Reacting to suggestions that World Rugby referee chief Alain Rolland had apologised to All Blacks coach Steve Hansen for Aaron Smith's yellow card in the game against Ireland, Schmidt said that the main concern of evryone involved is player safety.

"They are trying very hard to be very conscious of the safety of players," he said.

"Alain himself will be looking to drive that with the officials for this weekend and I think he'll be making not just referees, but TMOs, maybe, accountable to make sure that they are tracking the game and making sure they are accurate within it.

"At the same time you don't want a witch-hunt where you're stopping the game every two minutes for something that might have this or that.

"The game is going to be physical and fast. You don't want to stifle the game, but you want to keep it as safe as possible."
