Fresh from his win at the Tournament of Champions, Justin Thomas made history on Thursday as he became the youngest man to shoot a 59 on the PGA Tour.
Thomas' superb 11-under-par came on the opening day of the Sony Open with the 23-year-old carding two eagles and eight birdies but it would have been even better for the American had it not been for a solitary bogey.
Things started brightly for the world number 12 as he chipped in from the bunker on the 10th, his first hole, for eagle but he gave the shot back with his only bogey at the 11th.
He recovered with birdies at the 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th to reach the turn in 29 and his good form continued as he picked up shots at the first, second and fourth holes before closing with another eagle.
"It's been a good week or so now. It was a fun day out there, it was the most I've ever had it rolling," Thomas told PGA Tour Radio.
"My birdies were all very easy and I just had a lot of good luck and kept leaving it in the right spots.
"I didn't drive it as well on the back nine but I got down to the magic number and that's all that matters.
"When I chipped in on 10 on my first hole for eagle, you can't really think of a much better start than that. Once I turned on that front nine everything was coming pretty easy up until then so it was just trying to ride the momentum and keep trying to make birdies.
"When I was on the 18th fairway I started thinking about 59. I don't know whether that's a good or a bad thing but I just knew I was driving it well and if you drive it well, I hear you can make a lot of birdies."
Thomas is three shots clear of Hudson Swafford with Rory Sabbatini a further stroke adrift on seven-under-par.
