Shane Long is set to miss Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Austria on 11 June after the Southampton striker suffered a broken metatarsal last weekend.
Long limped out of the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on 13 May just moments after missing a penalty at the Riverside, and Saints' boss Claude Puel confirmed on Friday that Long would not feature in the Premier League again until next season.
Broken metatarsals take between six and eight weeks to heal, and the Austria game at Lansdowne Road takes place just four weeks on from the Boro game.
Long, who missed the 1-0 win over Austria in Vienna in November with a hamstring injury, suffered a broken foot after a challenge from Boro skipper Ben Gibson.
"Shane Long is unlucky with his broken metatarsal, but we will see him next season,” the Frenchman said ahead of Southampton's final game of the season against Stoke City at St Mary's.
Martin O’Neill’s Ireland side currently sit second in World Cup Qualifier Group D, level on 11 points with leaders Serbia but with an inferior goal difference.
Wales in third and Austria in fourth are on seven points from their five matches.
Ireland's cricketers' final match of the Walton Tri-Series against New Zealand will be shown live in Ireland on eirSport 1 (10.45am BST, coverage starts at 10.30am) on Sunday, 21 May.
