Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has accused Luke Shaw of being a 'long way behind' his team-mates.
Despite recovering from the double-leg break that forced him to miss the majority of the 2016-17 season, Shaw mas played just twice for United since the end of November with his last appearance coming in the draw with Bournemouth.
Mourinho was unhappy with Shaw for speaking to opposition players at half-time of the fiery encounter and it has been reported that relations between the manager and 21-year-old have deteriorated since.
Having been left out of the squad for Saturday's 0-0 draw with West Brom, a return to for Tuesday's clash with Everton looks unlike with Mourinho unhappy with his work-rate.
“It’s difficult for him to be on the bench because I cannot compare him with Ashley Young, with Darmian, with Blind,” Mourinho said ahead of Tuesday's game at Old Trafford.
“I cannot compare the way he trains, the way he commits, the focus, the ambition. I cannot compare. He is a long way behind.”
United will be without a number of players for Tuesday's game with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while Juan Mata could be out for the foreseeable future after undergoing groin surgery.
“I think a long time," Mourinho replied when asked how long Mata will be out for. "I think Mata, Jones and Smalling for a long time. (Paul) Pogba I cannot say is ready for Tuesday because I don’t know but Pogba is not such a long term injury as the others.”
