Karl Sheppard is expecting big things of Stephen Dooley in England next season.
Speaking on the LOI Weekly podcast, the Dubliner revealed how much he thinks of Dooley, who was super for Cork City in the double-winning campaign of last season.
Dooley and Sheppard were sandwiched up front by Sean Maguire – who since joined Preston – as Cork dominated most of the campaign. Sheppard is now the only one left of that trio at Turner's Cross.
In late May, Rochdale revealed the the signing of Dooley. The 26-year-old enjoyed a successful two-year spell with Cork City after signing in 2016, picking up the Premier Division and FAI Cup double last season.
Dooley started his career with Coleraine and appeared in the 2008 Irish Cup final at the age of 16, moved to Derry City in 2014 before a switch to Cork City two years later where he played alongside current Rochdale defender Ryan Delaney. Dooley rejoined the Bannsiders in January of this year and helped them to win the Irish Cup.
Sheppard said: "I wouldn't want to put any pressure on him or jinx him but honestly I think he'll tear it up.
"Ask anyone who played with him at Cork and they'll tell you he was one of most underrated players in the league.
"He is frightening quick, and strong as an ox for a small lad – even if you may not see it.
"His step-overs would leave anyone for dead. He was brilliant. I think he is going over quite late but he is really top quality."
