Yamaha rider Maverick Vinales claims pole at Spanish MotoGP as championship leader Marc Marques crashes out.
Movistar Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales claimed back-to-back poles in an incident-packed Spanish MotoGP at Aragon.
The Spaniard clocked a time of 1 min 47.635 secs on his final qualifying lap to deny team-mate Valentino Rossi [1:47.815], who held a remarkable provisional pole despite returning to racing just 24 days after suffering a double leg fracture in a training accident.
The Italian, 38, earned a place in the front row but was bumped to third in the final seconds of qualifying by Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo [1:47.735].
Reigning world champion and joint-leader Marc Marquez had earlier set the fastest time but failed to better it after crashing unhurt on turn 12 and had to settle for fifth on the grid, one place behind Honda team-mate Cal Crutchlow.
Marquez could at least take comfort in the knowledge that his closest challenger for the title Ducati''s Andrea Dovizioso trailed in seventh.
Marquez and Dovizioso have 199 points with five races remaining, while nine-time MotoGP champion Rossi is fourth 42 points behind.
