Spieth wants Ryder Cup over Tour Championship

Jordan Spieth would sacrifice a second FedEx Cup title for a maiden Ryder Cup victory.

Spieth won the Tour Championship 12 months ago to seal the FedEx Cup and with it the $10million bonus prize.

This week he will bid to become the first player to win back-to-back Tour Championships and in the process join Tiger Woods as the only player to win the FedEx Cup more than once.

However, the 23-year-old admits he is not fully focused on this week's season-finale because he is already beginning to think about the Ryder Cup and helping the United States to their first victory since 2008.

When asked if he would prefer a second Tour Championship or a Ryder Cup win, Spieth told reporters: "If you're saying 2016, right now, if I've got a choice... Ryder Cup. You want something that you don't have. That's a trophy that I've watched the other side of it now, and it hurt.

"It was tough at the closing ceremony.

"We had a good time that evening, but when we boarded the plane back home, it was an empty feeling. We don't want that again.

"I think I will have a Ryder Cup at some point. I think that will be easier to win, easier to have a Ryder Cup than a FedEx Cup going forward, given you may not play your best and you've got team-mates around you that play their best and win it.

"We remember that, those of us that were there, and the guys that were there in Medinah (2012), we want that celebration. We want that champagne falling off the balcony like they had wherever, in Valhalla (2008).

In the wake of the defeat to Europe two years ago, the PGA of America created a task force, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, to take a close look at their Ryder Cup failures.

They identified a number of areas that needed improvement and Spieth believes the team will be better prepared than ever before.

"I think I'm pretty confident about how we're going to go about our business. I think we've got a fantastic team this year, one of the best teams I can remember, and I love being a part of that," he said.
