Spurs end Wembley curse; Foxes hammered by Porto

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to book their place in the Europa League knock-out stages with a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champion’s League at Wembley.

Despite only winning two of their respective six games in the Champion's League, Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased with his side’s response after falling behind when Alan Dzagoev finished in the 33rd minute, against the run of play, before Dele Alli finished at the far-post from Christian Eriksen’s deep cross to level up the tie three minutes later.

The Wembley curse - which has seen Spurs fail to win at the iconic stadium in this season’s Champion’s League - was quickly fading as the home-side deservedly took the lead just before the break when Harry Kane dispatched Victor Wanyama’s cross.

Since his return from injury, Kane has revitalized an inconsistent Tottenham team, and will no doubt play an instrumental role in his side’s Europa League campaign, and it was the England international's cross to Alli in the 77th minute which killed off any chance of an unlikely CSKA comeback, when the midfielder's headed attempt deflected off Akinfeev into the goal, in what is the Russian’s 39th failed attempt at a clean-sheet.

The win was complemented when Toby Alderweireld returned from injury after coming off the bench, and the Belgian nearly added a fourth when his header whizzed narrowly over the crossbar, much to the relief of CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky, who steps down from the post after a seven-year stay.

Tottenham will now be seeded in Monday’s Europa League draw, and despite the disappointing showing in the Champion’s League, Wednesday's display suggests that the London side are still a force to be reckoned with in Europe.

The hosts came within centimetres of breaking the deadlock in the sixth minute when the impressive Kyle Walker played in Eriksen whose accurate ball towards Alli was headed just wide by the 20-year-old, who looked in fine-form early on.

Eriksen, who looked in sparkling form throughout the 90 minutes,- should have opened the scoring in the 13th minute when his lacklustre effort was comfortably gathered by Akinfeev.

Alli was guilty of squandering a chance of his own minutes later when the former MK Dons man failed deliever from close-range, after another wonderful ball from Eriksen, whose movements and passing caused the Russians problems all evening.

Spurs, and Pochettino now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they travel to Old Trafford to take on Jose Mourinho's Manchester United, knowing a win over the Red Devils will be a huge boost towards quailfication for next season's Champion's League.

Leicester City were thrashed 5-0 by FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão in what is the worst defeat ever suffered by an English club in the Champions League.

The Foxes, who made ten changes to their starting eleven, found themselves behind when Andre Silva headed home for the hosts, who needed to win to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Jesus Corona added a second for the former Champion’s League winners when the 23-year-old volleyed in to give the Portuguese side a deserved two-goal cushion.

Claudio Ranieri’s side failed to impose themselves on the game and Yacine Brahimi compounded the travelling fan’s misery in the 45th minute when the Algerian converted Maxi Pereira's cross.

Silva dispatched a spot-kick just after the hour mark after Danny Drinkwater fouled in the area, before Diogo Jota swept home in the 77th minute to complete the hammering.

Despite the loss, Leicester and their fans will look forward to the draw on Monday with the possibility of meeting teams such as, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or PSG.
