Spurs see off Burnley at the Lane

Tottenham had far too much for Burnley at White Harte Lane as a 2-1 win saw them keep up their chase on the top four.

The visitors took a surprise lead with a strike from Ashley Barnes, before Dele Alli struck back almost immediately for Spurs.

The winner came from a second half Danny Rose strike that secured the points for the Londoners, which moves them three points clear of Man United, and within one of Arsenal in fourth.

Spurs did all the pressing early on with Alli and Harry Kane both letting Burnley off the hook. At the other end Hugo Lloris was forced into tipping away an effort from Andre Gray.

But Spurs were the dominant side with Alli hitting the post when he got on the end of a Victor Wanyama flick on from the head.

Despite being under the cosh it was the visitors who drew first blood. Scott Arfield collected the ball on the edge of the area and played into the box where the ball ricocheted a number of times before falling to Barnes to slot home.

Burnley barely had time to settle before finding themselves level again. Kyle Walker squared the ball from the right for Alli to drill home to the bottom-right corner just a few minutes after the visitors had taken the lead.

After the leveller it continued to be mostly one-way traffic with Mousa Dembele and Kane both attempting efforts on goal, the former sneaking wide, the latter forcing a save from Tom Heaton.

Christian Eriksen was the next man to go close for Spurs as he was teed up by Dembele but forced his effort over the bar.

Alli was a constant threat for Spurs and almost got his second as he put a curling effort narrowly wide, before Barnes also almost got his second as he directed a header too close to Lloris.

Eriksen again called Heaton into action as he palmed away a fierce effort, which Ben Mee followed up on to clear the danger.

A second finally came for Spurs. Moussa Sissoko broke through the middle before laying off for Rose to smash home to the top-left corner to give Spurs the lead for the first time in the encounter.

Having been able to sit back for so much of the game, Burnley suddenly had to chase things, and began to punt balls into the box. Arfield came close with an attempted lob of Lloris but his effort landed on the roof of the net.

But it was still Spurs that were the better of the teams going forward with Ben Davies going close with a shot from distance as they saw out the game and took the points.
