Manchester City took a giant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals after they produced a fantastic performance to beat Dynamo Kiev 3-1 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Kiev.
Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure were on the scoresheet for Manuel Pellegrini’s men as they turned on the style to dismantle Kiev and leave themselves in total control of the tie.
The home side actually started brightly and were first to threaten after five minutes when City failed to clear a freekick and the ball fell to Andriy Yarmelonko.
The winger fired in a cross come shot that was anxiously tipped over the bar by Joe Hart.
City grew into the game after this as they began to dominate possession and they took the lead after 16 minutes.
From a corner, Yaya Toure nodded into the path of Sergio Aguero, the Argentine controlled on his chest and fired home a superb volley to give City a vital away goal.
The visitors continued to look threatening after the goal and they went close again five minutes later.
Fernando won the ball back inside the Kiev half and released Aguero, but the striker was off target this time as he fired his shot just past the post.
The visitors were in total control as Dynamo struggled to match their work rate and intensity and they had another great chance to double their leave after 35 minutes.
Again Fernando won the ball deep in the Kiev half, the midfielder played in Aguero who in-turn slipped in Toure as he raced into the penalty box, but his strike was tipped around the post.
However, there was nothing Olexandr Shovkovskiy could do five minutes before the break when City deservedly doubled their lead.
Agureo controlled in the left corner of the home box and cleverly backheeled into the path of Raheem Sterling who calmly picked out David Silva at the back post and he fired home to make it 2-0.
And it almost got even better for the visitors on the stroke of half time when Aguero raced through, but he dragged his shot wide as City went in 2-0 up at the break.
Dynamo were vastly improved at the beginning of the second half as they began to cause City some problems and they gave themselves a lifeline in the tie on the hour mark.
Vitaliy Buyalskiy pounced on a clearing header from Nicolas Otamendi and hit a powerful strike that whacked the centre half, before wrong-footing Joe Hart and flying into the bottom corner.
The goal brought a renewed confidence into Kiev’s play as they poured forward in search of an equaliser but they were almost undone by a City break with 15 minutes left.
Superb one touch play ended with Silva crossing to Aguero but he was denied by Shovovskiy in the home goal.
Joe Hart was called into action three minutes later when Miguel Veloso found Buyalsky on the edge of the box, but his strike was brilliantly clawed away by Hart.
The game remained wide open as City continued to push for a third and they really should have killed the game off when Raheem Sterling crossed for Yaya Toure inside the six yard area, but Toure somehow headed past the post when he really should have scored.
Toure, though, made up for this miss with a stunning goal in the final minute to wrap up the win.
The Ivorian exchanged passes with Fernandinho before curling in a sensational strike from the edge of the box to seal a 3-1 win for City.
