Taylor receives bye into quarter-final


Katie Taylor will be guaranteed a medal if she wins her first fight at the Rio Olympics.

The Olympic champion has received a bye into the Women's 60kg quarter-finals in Rio where she will fight either Finland's Mira Potkonen or Brazil's Adriana Araujo

Should she win her quarter-final bout, the Bray native will be guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

Paddy Barnes has also received a bye into the quarter-final of the men's 49kg competition with Ireland's flagbearer set to fight an Spain's Samuel Carmona or Armenian Artur Hovhannisyan in the last eight.

Flyweight Brendan Irvine must win three fights in order to secure a medal with his opening bout against Uzbek Shakhobiddin Zoirov scheduled for August 13, while Michael Conlan will begin his quest for Olympic glory against either Armenia's Aram Avagyan or Japanese fighter Arashi Morisaka on Sunday, August 14.

World Elite silver medallist Joe Ward will face a German Serge Michel or Ecuadorian Carlos Andres Mina in his first fight and he will be guaranteed an Olympic medal if he wins two fights in Brazil, while Michael O'Reilly has also received a bye into the second round where he will fight Misael Rodríguez of Mexico or Iraqi Waheed Abdul-Ridha on Friday week.

Lightweight David Oliver Joyce is first up for the Irish on Saturday when he will face Andrique Allisop of the Seychelles, with Steven Donnelly set to meet Algerian Zohir Kedache.
