Thistlecrack to make chasing bow

World Hurdle winner Thistlecrack is to make his debut over fences at Chepstow on Tuesday.

The eight-year-old won all five of his starts last season, rounding off the campaign with victories in the World Hurdle and the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree's Grand National meeting, but connections made the decision to send him over fences this season.

Trainer Colin Tizzard had hoped to give him his debut earlier this month only for quick ground to force a rethink and he will not be risked if conditions are not deemed suitable.

"I have made an entry today for Chepstow. If the ground is right we are going to go. He schooled again today and he is ready to go. But who knows what the ground is going to be like? If that doesn't work out, he will have an entry at Wetherby," Tizzard said on Wednesday.

Thistlecrack could be aimed at the Cheltenham Gold Cup rather than novice events but his trainer has previously warned that he could revert to hurdles if he fails to convince over the larger obstacles.

Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
