Thomas equals PGA 54-hole record

Justin Thomas' brilliant performance at the Sony Open in Hawaii continued on day three as a five-under-par 65 saw him equal the lowest 54-hole score in PGA history.

The American's opening 59 saw him become the youngest player to shoot a sub-60 round while on Friday his 64 meant he broke the record for the lowest 36-hole score of all time.

The 23-year-old then grabbed five birdies on a bogey-free day on Saturday to move to -22, equalling Steve Stricker's mark set at the John Deere Classic in 2010.

Thomas will enjoy a seven-shot advantage going into Sunday's final round with Zach Johnson his closest challenger on -15.

Gary Woodland and former US Open champion Justin Rose lie in a group in joint-third spot one shot behind Johnson while Scotland's Russell Knox is among three players on -13.

American Kevin Kisner sits in the group with Knox after signing for a stunning round of 60, a missed eagle putt on the last denying him the chance to join Thomas in the sub-60 record books.

Jordan Spieth is a shot further adrift on -12, a whopping 10 strokes behind the leader.

The all-time lowest 72-hole score on the PGA Tour was a 26-under-par effort by Tommy Amour III which was set at the Valero Texas Open in 2003; another 65 from Thomas would see him break that mark.
