Thompson backs Shawcross for Liverpool

Legend wants defender at Anfield

Former Liverpool great Phil Thompson believes that Ryan Shawcross is the answer to the club's defensive frailties.

Jurgen Klopp's side have conceded more goals than any other team in the top half of the Barclays Premier League table which is seriously undermining their chances of qualifying for Europe next season.

They beat Norwich 5-4 at Carrow Road on Saturday, but their defensive frailties were all too obvious as they conceded a couple of very poor goals and Thompson believes that England international Shawcross is just the type of player they need.

The Stoke defender has seen his side achieve seven clean sheets in their last 13 league games since he returned from injury and has qualities which Thompson feels are badly needed at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg meeting between the pair on Merseyside on Tuesday night, Thompson said:

"When Liverpool evaluate at the end of the season and look at the sort of goals they conceded, I wouldn't be averse to see them looking towards Shawcross as a solution.
"In fact I think he would be absolutely ideal and he's been one of the most underrated centre-backs over the last five seasons.

"You just have to look at Stoke's stats with and without him."
