Three late tries undo Ulster

Three late tries for Bordeaux-Begles undone an unlucky Ulster side 28-12 in their opening Champions Cup game in France.

Ulster, despite the defeat, will take heart in the fact the lead for most of the tie following an Andrew Timble try in the 21st minute.

Sebastien Taofifenua broke the travelling fan’s hearts when he went over just eight minutes from the end.

The victors conceded a late penalty try after Sean Reidy was sin-binned before Blair Connor got the third try.

Ulster will feel the pressure when they face Exeter in their next pool 5 tie next week and another defeat will all but end the Irish side’s hopes of reaching the quarter-final.

Despite an early Ian Madigan penalty, Ulster dealt with pressure from Bordeaux and registered a try when Trimble sailed past the home defence.

Paddy Jackson converted and later added another penalty to give the Ulstermen at half-time lead of 3-10, before Madigan reduced the deficit early in the second half.

It took until the 73rd minute for another score to register and it arrived after Romain Taofifénua went over after a driving maul.

A penalty try followed by a touch-down from Blair Connor wrapped up the win for the hosts who will turn their attention to the 22nd of October when the face Clermont Auvergne.
