Transfer Deadline Day - the main moves

Stoke smash record but big boys are quiet

On a day when it was announced that Pep Guardiola is to replace Manuel Pellegrini as manager of Manchester City this summer, it would have taken a truly massive transfer to usurp that as the biggest story.

No such big-money move was forthcoming and in truth, like many recent deadline days, the feeling of being underwhelmed is hard to shift.

Stoke City fans may differ as they saw Mark Hughes smash their transfer record to bring midfielder Giannelli Imbula from Porto for a fee of £18,3m. The Potters made room for the arrival of the 23-year-old by watching freely as Marco Van Ginkel - on loan for the first half of the season from Chelsea - moved to PSV until the end of the current campaign.

Everton were responsible for the second biggest deal of the day, signing Senegal forward Oumar Niasse from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow in a £13.5m deal.

The 25-year-old has 13 goals in 23 appearances for Lokomotiv this season and has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal on Merseyside.

Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy was reportedly a target for Manchester United but the France international ended up moving on loan to Bordeaux.

Gunners striker Yaya Sanogo meanwhile also left temporarily, making the switch to struggling Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Among a sprinkling of laon moves also were Leroy Fer who arrived from QPR, Fenerbahce's Emmanuel Emenike who joined Slaven Bilic's revolution at West Ham while Newcastle United secured Seydou Dumbia to bolster their front line; reports of Saido Berahino moving to Tyneside failing to come to fruition.

All-in-all a less than exciting transfer deadline day for all but the clubs who secured new arrivals, rescued however, by that huge news of Pellegrini and Guardiola.
