Nicole Turner says beating her personal best to finish fifth in the final of the 50m S6 Butterfly in at the Paralympics was "amazing and unbelievable".
The 14-year-old from Portarlington, Co Laois beat her qualifying time by more than a second when recording a time of 37.31 secs in the final.
"t’s amazing, when I saw the clock it was unbelievable that I took nearly a second off my best time," Turner, the youngest member of the Ireland team in Rio, told the 42.ie.
"After watching London four years ago I never thought I’d be at the next Paralympic Games, it’s incredible."
Britain's Ellie Robinson set a Paralympic record of 35.58 secs to beat defending champion and world record holder Oksana Khrul of Ukraine into second, with Australian Tiffany Kane taking bronze.
Turner, who is competing in six events in the pool in Rio, returns to the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Saturday for her S6 50m freestyle heat, which begins at 1.54pm Irish time.
