Two-match format for International Rules

The GAA has confirmed that the November 2017 International Rules series between Ireland and Australia will be played over two matches.

The series, played under a composite of Gaelic football and Aussie Rules regulations, moved to a one-off Test format following Ireland’s emphatic series win over an under-strength Australia in 2013.

Ireland are the current holders of the Cormac McAllen Trophy after beating Australia 56-52 at Croke Park in November 2015.

Former Armagh manager Joe Kernan will again take charge of the Ireland team for the matches on 11 and 18 November 2017, with the winner the team that scores the most points on aggregate over the two games. There will also be a return series in Ireland in 2019.

"We believe the two-game series is a logical development after the success of the last two single games series, given the distances involved and the potential to generate even more momentum around the games," said GAA president Aogan O Fearghail.

"We look forward to renewing rivalries with the best the AFL has to offer."

AFL general manager of football operations Mark Evans confirmed that the Aussie squad will again comprise All-Australian players, the AFL's equivalent of the GAA's All-Stars.

"The one-off Test matches in Perth and Dublin over the last two years were two high-class encounters played in front of very strong crowds," he said.

"Australian and Irish fans have shown they want to see a spectacular and competitive contest played between the most talented AFL players and Ireland’s best Gaelic footballers.

"Restricting selection to only a player who has earned All-Australian selection through his AFL career has ensured the prestige of playing in the International Rules Series and we look forward to hosting the Irish side again next year."

The GAA has also announced that, following trials in the Higher Education League, the "mark" will be introduced into Gaelic football in 2017.

The rule will read: "When a player catches the ball cleanly from a kick-out without it touching the ground, on or past the 45m line nearest the kick-out point, he shall be awarded a 'Mark' by the Referee. The player awarded a 'Mark' shall have the options of (a) Taking a free kick or (b) Playing on immediately".
